My name is Olena and I became interested in photography in 2019 and studied it for about two years, leaning more towards portraits, artistic black and white photography, as well as street photography. Since February 24, 2022, I started to make documentary photography fixating more everyday life of the Ukrainian frontline city of Zaporizhzhia where I was born and where I live now. Due to the proximity of the front about 30 km away, the city feels the impact of war every day. My experience in documentary shooting and reportages during the Russian-Ukrainian war are refugees, IDP shelters, humanitarian help, the volunteer movement, training of the military and civilian (tactical, first-aid, drone control), destructions after Russian missile attacks (Kyiv region, Kharkiv region, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia), SES and special units rescue operations, social projects as psychological support of wives of fallen during the war soldiers, ex-prisoners of war etc.
Just like in pre-war times, the focus of my attention and camera is still on people: how they react to the war, what they do, how they cope with new living conditions. During my work as a documentary photographer, I had more than 20 exhibitions around the world, two mural projects based on my photos (Vilnius, Lithuania), involvement in several documentary films, books, UNESCO and other projects, had publications in international and local media, etc. Now I work as a freelance documentary photographer, also for Getty Images.
