Heather McDonough (b. 1962) is an artist/educator born in the United States and now living and working in London. Heather explores photography through installation, moving image and bookmaking. Mortality and memory form the basis of her work, and various threads wend their way between family and place, incorporating objects and spaces where stories and souvenirs collide, often utilising a mix of camera-less process, analogue & digital formats to create sequences. She studied BA Graphic Design at Middlesex University; Photography at London Metropolitan University; and MA Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art. She is currently a lecturer in photography for the BA Photography at London Metropolitan University. Her work has been shown at the National Portrait Gallery and The Photographers’ Gallery and has been featured at numerous photography festivals in the UK, at Arles Photography Festival, and at UnSeen in Amsterdam. Her work was amongst the winners of the BJP Portrait of Britain Award 2019 and was featured in the Futures Now Aesthetica Award 2021; she has been longlisted again this year, 2024. She recently had work on display in At Home in Hackney, at the Hackney Museum.
