About Artist
Antonio Schiavano
In 1981, at the age of 17, I embarked on my photographic journey, initiated by a reflex camera bestowed upon me by my father. Initially, I grappled with its intricacies, but soon realized it would become my preferred medium of expression. A passage from Andreas Feininger's tome struck a chord within me: "Who cannot create an interesting photograph with an inexpensive camera will rarely achieve anything better with a costly one." Delving into still-life photography, I endeavored to comprehend the interplay of light and form, charting a self-taught course. Opting to forsake engineering studies, I devoted myself entirely to photography, relocating to Milan in 1988, where I unveiled my inaugural portfolio. Swiftly, I secured my maiden professional assignment through Alberto Nodolini, Vogue's Art Director, during the pinnacle of Made in Italy's ascendancy. Establishing my first studio in Milan in 1999, I fashioned luminous spaces with diverse settings for photographic shoots. Beyond photography, I have imparted knowledge and toiled as a journalist, refraining from showcasing my own works during workshops, instead focusing on eliciting the individual expression of each participant. Collaborating with numerous firms and agencies, I crafted campaigns for esteemed brands such as Alitalia, Avon, Cinzano, Cotril, Deborah, Korff, Kraft, Neauvia, Nivea, Rilastil, The Bridge, and Trussardi. In 2016, I was handpicked by Huawei to trial the nascent smartphone camera technology, showcasing its full potential. A steadfast commitment to research has been a cornerstone of my artistic trajectory, culminating in fine-art photography projects aimed at narrating both tales of others and my own, through the potent visual language of imagery. The ceaseless quest for fresh inspirations affords me the opportunity to explore novel forms of artistic expression, aiming to draw the viewer's gaze towards specific details and characteristic facets of the subject, often concealed within the simplicity of daily life, imperceptible to the naked eye. Despite the passage of many years in my vocation, I persist in viewing myself as a child at play, marveling at the enduring beauty that surrounds me, expressing myself through photography with an innocence and passion that endure through time's passage.
