A graduate of Goldsmith’s College, London, Emrâ Islek is a photographic artist working primarily with camera obscura and medium format photography. Her process draws upon the principles of psychophysical theatre and her practice navigates a territory where photography witnesses the performance. At the core of her work is an exploration tempered by a psychological inquiry of female identity, sexuality, and inflicted shame among other prevalent notions of femininity that are constantly undermined by a deeply patriarchal society.
Emrâ is always fascinated by the possibility of creative connections with artists from other disciplines. Her collaborative projects with dancers, musical and theatrical performers are an extension of her commitment to the key elements of her work: improvisation and performance.
