About Artist
Houman Katoozi
Houman was born in Iran and moved to the U.S. at 12, later relocating to Sydney at 26, where he found a deep connection to the city. His journey into photography began at 15, sparked by the design of his first cameraâa Minolta. Early on, he captured family moments, but his creative interest deepened while working at Apple, surrounded by other creatives. He learned photography organicallyâthrough experimentation, conversations with friends, and studying othersâ work. Initially drawn to golden hour landscapes and beaches, his work evolved during COVID lockdowns when movement was restricted. Unable to travel, he began noticing light, shadow, shapes, and architecture in his immediate surroundings. This period profoundly shifted his style and taught him the power of limitation. Over time, he embraced street photographyâfocusing on candid human emotion, composition, and storytelling. He now photographs almost exclusively in black and white, believing it removes distractions and offers timelessness. For Houman, photography is no longer about chasing a single âbangerâ image, but building meaningful, long-term projectsâlike *Sydney in Motion*, the *Iran project*, and the *Sydney beaches* series. His approach values composition above all, and heâs drawn to scenes where light transforms the ordinary. Ultimately, his work is an exploration of presence, emotion, and connectionâusing photography as a way to make sense of the world and create something lasting.
