The flamingo team

This surreal seaside tableau transforms a group of flamingos into unlikely players in a whimsical game. The birds appear frozen between grace and absurdity. A lone soccer ball rests nearby, hinting at a narrative both playful and enigmatic. Blending humor, poetry, and visual strangeness.

About Artist

Sophie Cool

Sophie Cool is both a midwife and a photographer—two practices she intricately weaves together to explore the body, intimacy, and the constantly shifting terrain of identity. Her years of experience in the world of birth have shaped her gaze: attentive to thresholds, to moments of transition, to the fragility and strength that coexist in every human being. This profound sensitivity to the stories that bodies carry lies at the core of her artistic vision. In her photographic work, Sophie gravitates toward staged portraiture, a space where the boundaries between reality and fiction soften, dissolve, and invite new meanings. She constructs images imbued with humor, poetry, and touches of surrealism, using the codes of everyday life only to bend, twist, or subvert them. Through this process, she reveals what is often hidden beneath the surface—internal tensions, unconscious inventions, emotional metamorphoses. Her compositions, often minimalist yet symbolically charged, challenge the viewer to reconsider how each of us inhabits our body, and how the body, in turn, inhabits us. Deeply engaged with questions of gender, Sophie explores the fluid zones where identity resists strict categorization. She rejects binary frameworks, embracing instead a multiplicity of expressions that are as legitimate as they are nuanced. In her work, gender becomes not a boundary, but a landscape—open, shifting, plural. Her images depict bodies not as fixed forms but as evolving presences, capable of shedding imposed identities and expanding into new ones. She portrays non-binary and diverse gender expressions not as exceptions, but as part of the broad and universal spectrum of human existence. This vision leads Sophie to question not only gender boundaries, but the very concept of bodily borders. Her photographs imagine bodies whose limits are porous—bodies that extend, merge, dissolve, and reshape themselves. Bodies that refuse confinement. Bodies as territories of possibility. In her universe, the body is no longer a closed system but a continuum, connected to others, to the environment, to imagination itself. This universalist view—where every body carries a shared humanity even in its singularity—guides her aesthetic choices and her ethical approach to representation. Through her series, Sophie strives to create portraits that do more than depict; they narrate. Stories of transformation, play, resistance, vulnerability, tenderness, and joy. Each image becomes a small theatrical stage, open to interpretation, where viewers are invited to confront their own identities, memories, and unspoken desires. Her work encourages us to see ourselves differently—to imagine identities not as rigid forms, but as fluid, ever-evolving constellations. Sophie’s photographic practice, nourished by care, listening, and a profound respect for human complexity, opens a space where the borders of the body fade, and where every person—regardless of gender, age, or form—can find a place to reinvent themselves. In this space, the body becomes universal: a shared language of experience, vulnerability, and imagination.
