I followed the fascinating lives of mayflies this spring-summer; nymphs spend about 2 years underwater, eating algae. They emerge(1), and become sub-adults (2), flying to a branch/reed and molting to adults(spinners,3). Their final, brief life stage: mate (males die), lay eggs(4) and females die(5).
