Elveden Hall, Suffolk

In 1863, Elveden Hall was home to exile Maharaja Duleep Singh; the last ruler of the Sikh Empire. The Guinness brewing family have owned the Estate ever since. Not open to the public or lived in for over 100 years, it has retained an eerie, preserved opulence and is featured in a number of films.

About Artist

Catherine Lee-Smith

My background is in oral history, sculpture & textiles. I am interested in generational narratives that become woven and embedded in our collective stories and sense of belonging. My photography is a quiet act of preservation; a celebration of the overlooked, neglected and forgotten. My work aims to capture the poignancy of ageing and the inexorable ravages of elemental forces on our urban landscape. I document remnants and traces of human presence within the built environment and expressions of identity that are often dismissed and ignored. I endeavour to capture visual stories that connect us to our sense of place, observe our passage and mark our parting.
