Illusions of Self: Still life

The series uses found objects from my mother’s home after she died to explore the emotional complexities, hopes, avarice & failures of family relationships. Reflecting how fragments of seen, unseen & hidden selves coalesce within us as melancholic speculations & darker agitations.

About Artist

Crispin Day

My photographic work draws on felt experiences and contemporary thought to explore the extraordinary nature of being human and a delight in the materiality and sculptural qualities of the photograph. After a longstanding career in clinical psychology and mental health research,, I completed the MA Photography, University of Arts, London in 2024 and begin a PhD in Photography there in 2025 . My latest work, Illusions of Self, is an exploratory meditation on the ways in which the self inhabits everyday spaces and artefacts beyond the corporeal. The series, produced as still life images, photobook, and photomontages reflects on the traces of selves embedded in the untouched domesticity and possessions of my mother’s home after she died, their relational meaning and the ways that fragments of self inhabit and transcend the everyday. Earlier work, such as Landscape Memories (2022), explored hidden family and social narratives existing unseen within the urban landscape. Produced in collaboration with Arab Image Foundation, Beirut, the photobook, Whispers of Being: A Book of Remembered Presence (2023), made from Palestinian textiles, using new screen prints of archival UNRWA images to explored dehumanising experiences of displacement. My work is held by University of the Arts, London and in private collections. I have exhibited at UAL and more widely in London.
