Light of Memory
A Saiun aircraft rests on the seabed, its engine and cockpit illuminated by lights. Emerging from the darkness, the aircraft recalls a time when it once flew above the ocean, its memory preserved beneath the sea.
About Artist
Atsushi Hori
Based in Nagano, Japan, I work as a semiconductor manufacturing equipment designer while pursuing underwater photography as an amateur photographer. Since beginning underwater photography in earnest in 2019, I have focused on the wrecks of World War II, seeking to create images that stand as compelling works of art in their own right. Living far from the ocean limits my opportunities to dive each year, but I devote every precious opportunity to creating photographs. The shipwrecks resting in the Chuuk Islands have spent decades becoming part of the marine environment, while continuing to change gradually through corrosion and natural disasters. I aim to document these scenes that can only be captured at this moment and preserve them as photographic works that convey the history of these wrecks to future generations. In recent years, my work has received recognition in photography competitions in Japan and abroad. I continue to refine my photographic expression while sharing the beauty and significance of these historic shipwrecks with a wider audience.
