Rescuers Of Ukraine
Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, rescuers from the State Emergency Services of Ukraine have found themselves on their own front line. They are the brave men and women who risk everything in the face of danger with the sole task of saving lives. They are the Ukrainian heroes without weapons.
About Artist
Edward Matthews
Multi-Award Winning Documentary photographer from the UK. After 6 years of experience in the nightlife industry and volunteering on an independent lifeboat in the UK, I felt like I was in a rut with my photography work. When the full-scale invasion of Ukraine happened in February 2022, I felt compelled to do something to help. In March, I made the decision that I would travel to Poland and use my skills as a photographer to support grassroots charities supporting displaced Ukrainians. After a short period doing this, I was asked to accompany a humanitarian aid convoy to the east of Ukraine. Little did I know that this would be the turning point of my career. I now work for the British charity, FIRE AID, which supports lower and middle-income countries with support for their fire sector. One of those countries is Ukraine, and I have been heavily involved in producing mixed media content to support their charitable goals of donating large quantities of fire equipment and vehicles to the Ukrainian fire service. I also set up the BRAVE MINDS program, which offers fully funded, crisis and mental health support specifically for Ukrainian rescuers.
