Sea Waste

Argentina exports wild red shrimp, a prized catch from Patagonia’s cold waters. While Spain and Japan import it whole, China and the U.S. prefer it processed. Local processing creates jobs but leaves behind 50-ton piles of shrimp heads, raising serious environmental concerns.

About Artist

Sofia Lopez Mañan

I am a photographer, filmmaker, artist, naturalist, and mycology lover with over ten years of experience documenting themes related to human relationships with biodiversity. I have been a visual Storytelling Nat Geo Explorer since 2021 and produced the projects with them. "The Book Of Nature" is my long-term project investigating "nature" as a cultural construction through a multi-platform. I have given lectures and collaborated with scientific investigations, won Poylatam 2023 Nuestra Mirada, mentioned in the PhMuseum Grant, Vogue Italy prize, and Sony Award with this project. I am now designing the book. As a filmmaker, I finished my Opera Prima, a six-year project on Japanese migration to Argentina, supported by a grant from the Argentine Cinema Institute (INCAA).
