Shining Newborn

In the waters off Mikurajima, I met a wild southern bottlenose dolphin calf, days or weeks old, with fetal folds—creases from being curled in the womb. Sunlight streamed through five meters of water as it swam close to its mother, who seemed to present her baby to me—a rare moment I’ll never forget.
