About Artist
Richard Washbrooke
Richard Washbrooke is a British documentary and commercial photographer based in Hertfordshire, UK. With more than two decades of professional experience, he has built a diverse body of work spanning documentary photography, sport, architecture, construction, public events and commercial commissions. His photography is driven by a fascination with people, place and the moments that connect them, creating images that balance visual impact with authentic storytelling. Working full-time as a freelance photographer since 2009, Richard has developed a reputation for producing compelling imagery in challenging environments. Whether photographing major sporting occasions, documenting complex construction projects, capturing architectural spaces or covering large-scale public events, his approach remains consistent: to observe carefully, anticipate decisive moments and produce photographs that communicate both atmosphere and narrative. Richard’s commercial clients include contractors, developers, architects, consultants and organisations that require strong visual communication throughout the life of a project. His work combines ground-based photography with aerial imaging to document progress, celebrate completion and create engaging content for marketing, publications, award submissions and corporate communications. His understanding of architecture, engineering and the built environment enables him to produce images that are both technically accurate and visually engaging. Alongside commercial commissions, personal documentary projects remain central to his photographic practice. He believes that the strongest documentary photography is created through patience, observation and an understanding of the relationship between people and their surroundings. Rather than directing scenes, Richard prefers to work unobtrusively, allowing authentic moments to unfold naturally before the camera. This philosophy is reflected in his recent documentary project, The Day Holloway Road Turned Red, which records Arsenal’s championship celebrations as they unfolded through North London. Photographed from the roof of London Metropolitan University, the project presents a distinctive elevated perspective that reveals not only the scale of the celebrations but also the relationship between supporters, architecture and the urban landscape. Instead of focusing solely on the parade itself, the work explores how an entire community experienced a historic sporting occasion, transforming familiar streets into a shared public celebration. The project has been entered into a number of national and international photography competitions and forms part of Richard’s continuing interest in documenting the interaction between people and place. Richard is equally at home photographing elite sport. His experience includes professional golf, rugby, athletics and major sporting events where anticipation, timing and an understanding of the game are essential. His sporting images seek not only to capture action but also emotion, concentration, celebration and the human stories that exist beyond the competition itself. His photography has appeared in national newspapers, websites, corporate publications, marketing campaigns and theatre programmes. One of his images of Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds, photographed during the London 2012 Paralympic Games, was selected for inclusion on a Royal Mail stamp, providing national recognition for his work. Across every assignment, Richard aims to create photographs with longevity. Rather than producing images that simply record an event, he seeks to make photographs that remain meaningful long after the moment has passed. Strong composition, careful use of light and an instinct for storytelling underpin every project, regardless of subject matter. As digital media continues to evolve, Richard has expanded his services to include aerial photography, video production and visual content creation, enabling clients to tell richer stories across multiple platforms while maintaining the same documentary integrity that defines his still photography. Richard’s work continues to explore themes of community, identity, place and celebration. Whether documenting the transformation of the built environment, the atmosphere of a sporting event or the quiet details of everyday life, he strives to create images that encourage viewers to pause, observe and connect with the world around them. His current work focuses on developing long-term documentary projects alongside commercial commissions, with an increasing emphasis on fine art exhibition, photographic publications and international photography competitions. Through every photograph, Richard aims to produce work that is honest, enduring and visually memorable.
