Bio

Born and raised in Ukraine, Andrew Rovenko has been calling Australia home for the past 20 years. With a background in editorial photography, he eventually shifted focus to personal projects, favoring film photography as his medium of choice. This transition allowed him to explore creative narratives unburdened by commercial constraints, leading to the development of deeply personal and visually compelling stories. Based in Melbourne, Rovenko has gained international recognition for his evocative storytelling, particularly through the acclaimed series The Rocketgirl Chronicles that was born out of Melbourne’s extended lockdowns. Using a medium format film camera, Rovenko captured poignant portraits of his young daughter dressed as an astronaut, navigating surreal yet familiar suburban landscapes. The project resonated globally, symbolizing childhood resilience and imagination amidst uncertainty. Expanding on this success, Rovenko published a critically acclaimed book under the same name, which quickly became a multi-award-winning publication receiving numerous honors, including the 2024 International Photography Awards’ Best Fine Art Book and the Prix De La Photographie Paris Book of the Year. Andrew’s images are characterized by their rich textures, cinematic compositions, and an emotional depth that invites viewers to look beyond the frame. His photographic philosophy is rooted in storytelling, with each frame carefully composed to capture not just a moment, but a feeling. Whether he’s photographing urban landscapes or intimate portraits, Rovenko’s work is imbued with a sense of nostalgia and narrative depth. Andrew has been named 2021 Australian Photographer of the Year by the Australian Photography Magazine and his work received international recognition with a number of awards and publications including Vogue, Marie Claire and Rolling Stone Magazine and has been exhibited across the world.
