About Artist
Ceridwen Hughes
Ceridwen Hughes is a widely exhibited artist whose photography and films are rooted in social change. Her work uses portraiture and storytelling to spark curiosity and empathy, encouraging audiences to engage with the lives and experiences of people who are often un-heard or marginalised. In 2015, Ceridwen founded Same but Different CIC, an organisation dedicated to using the arts as a catalyst for meaningful conversation and positive social impact. Over the past ten years, her practice has grown to encompass twelve major projects addressing complex is-sues including rare disease, disability, homelessness and loss. Her first project, Rare Aware, reached a global audience and challenged perceptions of rare disease by focusing on the person rather than the condition. The work was exhibited at both the Houses of Parliament in London and the Senedd in Wales. Subsequent projects have continued to confront difficult subjects with sensitivity and honesty, including You’re Not Alone, which explores the death of babies through Trisomy 13 and 18 and highlights the im-portance of compassionate support for families. Alongside her photography, Ceridwen has produced short films over the past five years, screened at events worldwide and recognised with numerous awards. Her distinctive style, ability to capture personality, and talent for creating images that invite reflection and dia-logue have led to her work being exhibited and published internationally. She is frequently commissioned to produce photography and film that challenges viewers and encourages deeper understanding. Ceridwen is currently developing Dying to be Heard, part of the What Matters Most? work through Same but Different. This project focuses on end-of-life care, using creative practice and conversation to explore what truly matters to people at the end of life, and to support more open, compassionate dialogue around dying and death. In recognition of her impact and creative leadership, Ceridwen was selected as a Hasselblad Heroine in 2023.
