EARNED IN THE DARK
Earned in the Dark explores the unseen side of dance—the discipline, sacrifice, strength, and vulnerability beyond the stage. Set against darkness, the series strips away the spectacle of performance to reveal the perseverance and emotional weight behind the pursuit of dance.
About Artist
Marcus Collins
Marcus Collins is an international award-winning photographer and visual storyteller based in Franklin, Massachusetts, specializing in elite movement, form, and narrative-driven fine-art photography. His work received third place in the Sports category at the 2026 International Photography Awards, earning international recognition for his distinctive visual style and emotionally driven approach to photographing athletes. His work exists somewhere between sports photography, fine-art portraiture, and cinematic storytelling. Characterized by intentional lighting, dramatic contrast, and an emphasis on strength and emotion, his photographs explore resilience, identity, and the experiences that shape who we become. With more than a decade of experience coaching competitive club softball, he brings an understanding of athletic performance that extends far beyond the camera. He understands the discipline, pressure, confidence, frustration, and perseverance that exist long before an athlete steps into the spotlight. That perspective continues to influence his work, particularly his growing focus on ballet and contemporary dance. Rather than approaching dance solely as an artistic performance, Marcus photographs dancers as the powerful athletes they are, emphasizing the strength, precision, and determination behind every movement. His philosophy is simple: "Dance photographers photograph dance. Marcus photographs dancers like athletes." As his artistic vision has evolved, he has moved beyond documenting individual moments toward creating immersive photographic narratives that combine fine-art imagery with original storytelling. He is particularly drawn to the moments that often go unseen, when confidence is tested, perseverance is forged, and character begins to emerge. *Unbroken", his first long-form narrative photographic project, represents that evolution. Combining cinematic fine-art photography with an original fictional story, the project explores childhood, courage, friendship, resilience, and the universal search for belonging. Rather than documenting the personal lives of its young dancers, "Unbroken" uses photography and fiction to create a modern fable about the emotional challenges young people face as they discover their own strength. Marcus lives in Franklin with his wife and their 11-year-old daughter, a multi-sport athlete whose experiences have profoundly influenced his understanding of young performers and the people behind their achievements. Throughout his creative journey, his wife has remained his greatest supporter. Whether photographing competitive athletes, dancers, or subjects within his conceptual narratives, He believes the most meaningful images do more than preserve a moment. They reveal the strength, humanity, and transformation that often exist long before the world takes notice.
