Somewhere in the Middle
As the USA began the trudge through its current political divide, I felt disconnected from the place I once cherished. My identity dissonance gave way to curiosity about the region in the nation’s center. These photos, taken over the last 8 years, record my explorations in the present moment.

Cynthia Johnston
Cynthia Johnston is a documentary and fine art photographer based in the Boston, MA area. Raised in the Midwest and the daughter of a WWII refugee, she delves into the complexities of personal and cultural identity through her photographic work. Drawing on her background in scientific research, Johnston brings a unique perspective to her photography. With a keen eye for detail, she approaches her subjects objectively, capturing moments that reflect a deep understanding of human experiences. Johnston's emerging work has gained recognition nationally and internationally, with her pieces finding a place in corporate and private collections across the United States, Canada, Germany, and Spain. Recent work includes an invitation to the Los Angeles Center of Photography’s “Reservoir” project and exhibition in 2026, a 3-person show with LACP in 2025. Awards include an invitation to the 2023 Review Santa Fe, first-place awards in the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers (press/editorial) in 2021 and 2023. She also received a silver medal at the 2022 Prix de la Photographie de Paris (political) and was shortlisted for the 2022 London International Creative Competition.
