Scarlett Coten is a French visual artist graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles. Based in the south of France since 2020 after years in Paris, Scarlett dedicates herself to profound personal projects while contributing to national or international press. Throughout her journeys worldwide, her work centered on important social issues related notably, to notions of marginality and resistance. Her artistic approach delves into the intricacies of identity, gender, and intimacy linked to notions of nomadism, margins, and survival. Her immersive approach blending documentary precision with a cinematic inspiration transcends traditional boundaries, and her work both artistically captivating and politically charged, reflects a profound connection between the artist and her subjects. Scarlett is the winner of prestigious grants and awards, including the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2016, Critical Mass TOP 50 2018, Photography Now 2021 (Center for Photography at Woodstock), or the Ministry of Culture’s Grande Commission 2022. Her photographs are showcased in French public collections: National Contemporary Art Fund (Cnap), Regional Contemporary Art Fund (Frac Bretagne), National Library of France, and have been shown in numerous solo and group shows in France and worldwide (CPW, Palais de Tokyo, Institut du Monde Arabe, Museum of Sydney, Guangzhou… Her debut monograph, "Still alive," published by Actes Sud in 2009, and her contribution in many anthologies and exhibition catalogs, solidifie her enduring influence in the contemporary artistic landscape.
